Bathyscapthe Trieste being lowered into the ocean

In 1960, Jacques Piccard and Lieutenant Don Walsh turned the primary people ever to journey to the world’s biggest depth, the underside of the Mariana Trench within the Pacific Ocean.

They tried the expedition within the Bathyscaphe Trieste, a submersible particularly designed to resist the super stress they might encounter.

Don Walsh spoke to Witness History about their pioneering feat.
